Matara
Matara 160km (100miles) from Colombo, has a population of
around 40,000 and is the eighth biggest town on the island.
It is also the terminus on the southern railway line. An
ancient settlement, matara has been occupied by the portuguese,
Dutch and English and reflects the different influences
of these various visitors. Much of the old town lies within
Matara Fort, which was erected
by the Dutch. As in Galle, the fort is a quiet refuge from
the busy comercial town, and the best small guest houses
are found in its Mediterranean style, peaceful back streets.
The much smaller Star Fort, built
in 1763, houses the Museum of Ancient
Paintings and in a factory nearby, on Dharmapala
Mawatha, you can see traditional drums being made and you
can also buy authentic instruments. |
