College Chapel

Mawatha, was founded in 1872 to provide education on english
lines for the children of British planters and administrators
and for Sri Lankan converts to the Anglican church. It is
Still the Country's foremost Christian educational establishment.
The chapel, with its granite columns carved with traditional
sinhalese architectural influences, with wooden doorways
and roof beams carved by local craftsmen, a pantiled roof
and overhanging eaves that echo the design of the Tooth
Temple. The work of the college's vice Principal, it was
begun in 1922 to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation
of Trinnity College. The huge murals within depiciting stories
from the Bible, are the work of the aptly named David
Paynter, one of Sri lanka's most famous artists.
